FCHS and FCMS to Host Literacy Event
BLUE RIDGE, GA – Thursday, March 28, 2019
Calling all Gryffindors, Hufflepuffs, Ravenclaws, and Slytherins! Following the success of last year’s inaugural literacy night, Fannin County High School and Fannin County Middle School will again be co-hosting A Return to Hogwarts , a free literacy night on Thursday, March 28, 2019 from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m. on the Fannin County High School campus. Students, families, and community members are invited to come immerse themselves in the world of Hogwarts.
Following the interactive literacy festival, we will host a free showing of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets at
6:05 p.m. in the FCHS Performing Arts Center (PAC).
Pick up your Marauder’s Map at the main entrance to guide you around the campus to our various activities; if you get lost along the way, a wandering National Honor Society (NHS) wizard will help guide you to your destination! If individuals need to know their Hogwarts houses, stations will be set up to take the test and get sorted! Once sorted, you will be able to take a picture with the Sorting Hat and sign your Hogwarts House Banner to declare your placement. Students will also be able to assist with the ultimate defeat of Voldemort by engaging in an epic Horcrux Scavenger Hunt.
Some of the other experiences offered will include: Ollivander’s wandmaking and crafting projects, potions class, photo prop stations, and spells/word building and exploration with the Fannin County Library. Hogwarts-inspired snacks and beverages (including hot dogs for those in need of something more substantial) will be provided through partnerships with Ellijay Telephone Company (ETC), Sugar Mama’s Bakery, the FCHS Academic Booster Club, the FCMS Parent Advisory Group, and the Copper Basin Federal Credit Union. Georgia Cancer Specialists will host Madam Pomfrey’s Magical Maladies booth, and the National Art Honor Society (NAHS) students will offer face painting that evening as well. The Future Georgia Educator (FGE) students will provide an age-appropriate experience for some of our younger attendees with the Wizards-in-Training room. FGE will also be hosting their annual book drive where they will be collecting new and gently used children’s books. These books will then be given back to Fannin County children through various community organizations, such as the Boys and Girls Club.
Also, inquisitive and competent young (and more mature) wizards will be able to test out their Harry Potter knowledge by competing in Harry Potter trivia and by taking an Ordinary Wizarding Level (OWL) Exam administered by Dumbledore himself! Community partnerships have also generously donated several door prizes to reward the attendance of these avid readers and Harry Potter enthusiasts!
This year, we will also be providing a Community Resource Showcase, where you will be able tolearn about available resources within the county. Family Connections and the Mobile Food Pantry will be in attendance, as will the Fannin County Empty Stocking Program, the Fannin County Health Department, the Blue Ridge Mountain Arts Association, Georgia Cancer Specialists, the FERST Foundation/Rotary Club, the Boys and Girls Club of Fannin County, and North Georgia Technical College/FLAG (Adult Literacy). The University of North Georgia (UNG) will host a game area, and the UNG Scholars Program students will work across the event as part of their culminating service learning project for the year. Lastly, we will have a booth with applications for the 2019-2020 Blue Ridge Elementary Pre-K program, along with information on early learning and literacy.
Wear your finest Hogwarts regalia (minus masks for safety purposes), and join us for this magical evening! This event is entirely free, and it is provided to the Fannin County community through many generous community partnerships.
This event is designed to welcome all ages. Prior to the start of the festival, we will celebrate the life and legacy of
Mrs. Sandra Mercier through the dedication of two Little Free Libraries on the FCHS campus at 4:00 p.m. If you would like additional information, please feel free to contact Sarah Welch, Literacy Coach, at Fannin County High School via email at or by phone at 706.632.2081 ext. 125.
